Our region is the birthplace of the industrial revolution, historically delivering UK and global firsts in technology. Today, a whole range of projects and initiatives are ensuring the North West is at the forefront of hydrogen development and delivery.
- HyNet – A lowest cost, lowest risk and deliverable project to reduce carbon emissions from industry, domestic heat and transport. It involves the production of hydrogen from natural gas, the development of a new pipeline for industrial users and the blending of up to 20% hydrogen into the existing gas infrastructure. There is added consideration for the creation of the world’s first CCUS infrastructure by piping CO2 to the Hamilton field in the East Irish Sea. HyNet will ultimately provide an extra £17 billion GVA to the UK economy by 2050 and create nearly 6,000 jobs by the mid-2020s. HyNet is managed by Cadent and Progressive Energy.
- Centurion – 100MW Power-to-gas (P2G) energy storage feasibility study at Inovyn in Runcorn, Cheshire. Explores electrolytic production, pipeline transmission, salt cavern storage and gas grid injection of hydrogen. Partners include: ITM Power, INOVYN, Storengy, Cadent and Element Energy.
Powerhouse Energy – Based at Thornton Science Park. Developing thermal conversion technologies to produce syngas from waste sources. Hydrogen can be extracted from Syngas, where it can be either injected into a transmission network or used for hydrogen fuel cells.
MMU Fuel Cell Innovation Centre – Manchester Metropolitan University developed a new £4m hub to provide cutting-edge fuel cells, fuel cell materials and technologies. Also leading the HySchool project that delivers hydrogen education in schools.
HyDeploy – An energy trial to establish the potential for blending hydrogen up to 20% into the normal gas supply to reduce carbon emissions. It will determine the level of hydrogen which can safely be used by gas customers with no behavioural changes. The trial is hosted at Keele University and funded by Cadent, Northern Gas Networks, Health and Safety Laboratory and ITM Power.
ULEMCO – Specialises in low emission technology, offering engineering services for the conversion of engines to run on hydrogen, particularly the conversion of commercial vehicles to run as dual fuel hydrogen diesel vehicles, where the approach allows fleet managers to reduce their carbon dioxide emissions to ultra-low levels.
Alstom – Develops equipment and services for the transport sector. In the process of converting electric trains to hydrogen operation by fitting hydrogen tanks and fuel cells. Alstom is the first company to introduce a UK regional train based on hydrogen fuel cells and batteries.
- Improving air quality by bringing hydrogen buses to Liverpool – INOVYN, Costain and Element Energy are doing a collaborative feasibility study to shape an engineering solution to bring hydrogen buses to the streets of Liverpool to help improve air quality and meet UK emissions targets. The scheme aims to process hydrogen already being produced by INOVYN at the Runcorn Site and to deliver it in line with fuel grade specifications. Costain has a heritage of engineering hydrogen processing projects and work on this scheme continues the drive to influence the future energy landscape by developing solutions to support decarbonisation.
