Hydrogen Week returns for second year to showcase the UK hydrogen opportunity
Following the success of the inaugural Hydrogen Week in February 2023, dates have been announced for the 2024 awareness raising week. Taking place from Monday 26th February until Friday 1st March 2024 it will bring together stakeholders from across the nation to collaborate, celebrate and promote the role of hydrogen in reaching the UK’s net zero targets.
With over 6,300 individuals and 110 partners and supporters taking part in this year’s Hydrogen Week, 2024 is set to be even bigger. Spearheaded by the North West Hydrogen Alliance (NWHA), Hydrogen Week 2024 will unite hydrogen regions across the UK with Hydrogen UK, Hydrogen East, Net Zero Industry Wales, The Solent Cluster, East Midlands Hydrogen and Hydrogen South West already signed up as partners.
The week-long event will bring together industry, academia and government to facilitate the UK’s role as a world leader in hydrogen and capitalise on the huge opportunity the sector offers for both reducing carbon emissions and driving green economic growth.
Organisations and individuals across the UK are being called on to once again get involved by holding hydrogen themed events and activities. This year saw businesses, community groups, schools, universities and supporters from across the nation take part with an array of events, podcasts, exhibitions, reports and educational initiatives – with everything from a rocket launch to buggy racing!
Dr Tony Smith, Chair of the NWHA, said: “We all know that urgent action is needed to protect the planet and reduce carbon emissions. Hydrogen is set to play a pivotal role in that transition, providing clean energy for our homes, businesses and transport networks.
“We have the opportunity to be world leaders in developing a hydrogen economy which could create 100,000 jobs and £13 billion of GVA in the UK by 2050. Hydrogen Week is a great opportunity for the UK to come together and shine a spotlight on the progress we’ve already made. This year thousands of people from Aberdeen to Bristol to Northern Ireland took part and we’re urging more people to get involved in Hydrogen Week 2024 so we can increase understanding about the role hydrogen can play in achieving net zero.”
Clare Jackson, Chief Executive of Hydrogen UK said: “We are excited to be supporting UK Hydrogen Week again after last year’s success! 2024 will be an important year for hydrogen as we will start to see production projects taking final investment decisions and beginning construction. The UK is well placed to capitalise on the opportunities presented by hydrogen but only if we push on and deliver on our ambitions. Hydrogen UK looks forward to working with the UK Hydrogen Week to raise the profile of technologies and projects and ensure that the role that hydrogen will play in delivering Net Zero is well understood across the country.”
Hydrogen Week 2024 is sponsored by SSE Thermal, Northern Valve & Fitting Company Limited (NVFCL), Cadent and HyNet North West with further sponsorship opportunities available.
