United Living subsidiary Fastflow strides forward on its net-zero target

Fastflow Group, a subsidiary of United Living Infrastructure Services, has set an ambitious target to become carbon net-zero by 2030, a full twenty years ahead of Government targets.

To help cut carbon (CO2e) and harmful air emissions, low emission, high-performance Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) will be used to power all site plant and equipment on all new Fastflow sites, which represents a 90% carbon reduction compared to traditional diesel.

Collectively, diesel is a non-renewable resource that has negative environmental impacts and contributes significantly to our carbon footprint.

James O’Donnell, Operations Director at United Living Infrastructure Services, said: “As part of our journey to carbon net-zero by 2030, we have collaborated with our fuel supply chain partners and trialled an alternative fuel source known as Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) on the Aylesbury gas pipeline diversion project.

“Results are very positive, and we are proud to announce as part of our net-zero commitment that HVO will be purchased as standard across all new Fastflow sites. Resulting in a net 90% carbon reduction compared to traditional diesel, which is fantastic news.”

The use of HVO will significantly improve the environmental impact of FES activities. It is a direct replacement fuel and can be manufactured from sustainable and renewable resources such as waste fats from animals and cooking.

  • HVO is a fossil free, bio-diesel (FAME) free, paraffinic alternative to diesel;
  • Its use represents a net 90% carbon reduction compared to using traditional mineral diesel;
  • HVO can be manufactured from sustainable and renewable resources;
  • Typically, it’s manufactured from vegetable oils but it can also be manufactured from other feedstocks such as waste fats from animals and cooking, which would otherwise need to be disposed of.
